Public Gallery by Alex Harrison and Harry Dougall.

Open Tuesday – Friday: 11-6pm / Saturday: 11-5pm

Public Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with a diverse international programme focused on emerging artists. They opened up in London in May 2018 and was based in Dalston until relocating to Petticoat Square during lockdown to have a larger and more centrally located space that allows them to mount a more ambitious programme of exhibitions.

We were so overwhelmingly happy when we heard the news Public Gallery was moving in next door.
During lockdown we didn’t really quite know what would happen to this part of town. Businesses were closing and we genuinely thought we would be left all alone here. Getting another cultural business in to Petticoat Square has made us really want to push for art and culture even more in this part of town. There are so many opportunities with the newfound empty spaces here, and its such a wonderful and a weird pocket of London that has yet to develop its own identity.

Five quick questions.

What has your first few months in Petticoat Lane been like?
Exciting, everyone has been very welcoming, it has been great to see so many new and familiar faces visit the gallery.

What is your favourite show on in London now, apart from your own?
CLAY TM  at TJ Boulting – a group show ‘exploring the diverse use of clay and connecting the ancient with contemporary’ including some of our favourites.

‘Our ashes make great fertilizer’ is this an optimistic nod to the current state of the world?
“Sometimes you need to scorch everything to the ground and start over. After the burning the soil is richer, and new things can grow. People are like that, too. They start over. They find a way.” – Celeste Ng, Little Fires Everywhere.

What is the next gallery opening you will be going to in London?
Aks Misyuta: The days of the Comet, Union Pacific – really looking forward to this show at our new neighbours

For anyone else with a burning desire to start a gallery, what is the first step and what is the best advice someone ever gave you at the beginning of your journey?
Ask yourself why, ‘keep at it’.
